Strenghts, weaknesses and improvements to be made

After uploading my draft music video and gaining feedback from my peers, friends and family and teacher I made this list of strengths, weaknesses and the improvements I am going to make.

  “Your light”- Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths.

-Introducing and establishing the main character. I feel as though this is a strength of my video as the early shots create an intimate atmosphere being purely of the girl alone and following everyday steps to leave the house. When showing my peers my draft video, they explained that this was sufficiently shot and introduced her clearly as the singer of the video since she is the only character shown, as the female’s voice is the only voice heard.

-Close ups of the girls’ feet walking. I had trouble keeping the camera still in these shots but I found a better way to compose them, keeping the camera still while the feet are shown to walk past (0:38). I think these shots are effective in creating a sense of movement, helping the video move and creating a concept of time changing

. -My character’s costume. I am happy with the clothes that I dressed my main character in. This is because I feel as though I sufficiently researched the clothes that the artist of my song wears while combining current fashions and conventions of soul and the element of R&B that my artist explores within her genre.

-Composition of shots in the garden. For example, at 0:27, I am pleased with the composition of the female walking down the bridge, this is because it shows the aesthetics of the garden while the female walks down it at the same pace of the music. The camera is still and therefore links to other shots of the female walking such as down the steps, this adds a level of consistency to the shot.

-Establishing shots of the garden. I like the use of establishing shots as they add another level and different type of composition to what the audience see. I also believe they bring the video back and allow the audience to appreciate the location as well as simple establishing it. However, I would like to refilm these shots as they can be wobbly at times.

Weaknesses and the improvements I will make,

-Title card. I need to add a title card at the beginning of the video in order to introduce my name and exam number as well as increasing the professionalism of the video by showing the name and artist of the song.

-Missing shots. The biggest problem with my draft music video is the lack of footage in the black sections. Here, I am going to add shots of a band who play the song, this is a way to make my video more diverse as well as bringing it back to the music. It is important to link the music into the video visually to express the songs rhythm and lyrics, which is especially important in a soul song video as they are typically emotional and relay important personal messages.

-Length of the song. In order to ensure that my music video does not become dull and uninteresting and to reduce the amount of footage needed I plan to cut the song to around 2 minutes and fade the music out in this quite period.

-0:09 beat cut. My music video would appear more professional as well as more in touch with the music if at points such as here, I cut to the beat of the song and the instruments heard. Such as the guitar and the tambourine.

-0:33 glitch. At this point in my video, there is a glitch due to the editing. Therefore, I am going to edit it more smoothly with a transition and if this doesn’t help it, I will film the two shots the I am cutting together as one longer shot without stopping the camera to totally eliminate the effect of a jump cut. This is also relevant at 0:48.
